Head Shadow is an iPhone application designed for individuals with hearing impairment in one or both ears. By utilizing the microphones on the iPhone or connected devices, the app captures ambient sounds, which are then enhanced to suit your auditory preferences through a 10 Band Equalizer.
To fully experience the app, users require a pair of wired or Bluetooth earbuds. Wired EarPods that come with new iPhones are compatible, as well as Bluetooth options like AirPods and AirPods Pro. For optimal performance, AirPods Pro should create a tight seal in the ears, while EarPods and regular AirPods should fit snugly.
AirPods and AirPods Pro feature microphones for each ear, allowing users with single-sided deafness to designate an active microphone. This functionality is particularly beneficial for those with hearing loss in one ear. By placing the active microphone AirPod in the deaf ear and the other in the functional ear, Head Shadow captures and amplifies sounds from one ear to the other.
For individuals with bilateral hearing loss, Head Shadow can be used with any type of earbuds. The iPhone's built-in microphone offers the best sound capture, presenting two listening options. Wired earbuds, such as EarPods, deliver superior sound quality but come with limited mobility due to cables. Alternatively, Bluetooth earbuds like AirPods offer freedom of movement at the expense of minimal latency.
iOS 14's Headphone Accommodations feature serves as a complimentary audio booster for all hearing aids. Pairing this feature with Apple EarPods enhances media and call clarity. With AirPods Pro, users can utilize audiogram data from their hearing tests for personalized settings, including Noise Cancellation for noisy environments and Transparency for hearing ambient sounds.
Employing audiogram frequencies to amplify sound, Head Shadow works seamlessly with AirPods Pro's Noise Cancellation feature. The application optimizes sound quality without straining iPhone resources and allows for precise sound adjustments when necessary.
Head Shadow transforms AirPods Pro into an effective hearing aid for individuals with single-sided deafness. By setting AirPods Pro to Transparency Mode, users can amplify and enhance surrounding sounds, while Noise Cancellation Mode offers crystal-clear audio from the deaf side.
Upon installation, Head Shadow offers four distinct hearing programs tailored to different listening conditions. Users can select the most suitable program in real-time and further fine-tune it using the 10 Band Equalizer while listening to audio. Customized programs are stored on the iPhone for future use until adjustment.
The user-centric design of Head Shadow prioritizes ease of use, accessibility, and efficient utilization of iPhone battery life. The app operates in the background and responds to remote controls from the Lock Screen.
